Things to do with kids: President's Week School Break Camps and Activities in New Jersey

Yes, another installment in the "are they ever in school?" saga; a number of Northern NJ school districts are closed for President’s Week from February 20 - 24. If you're anticipating the cabin fever already, never fear! Just check out some of these great day camps and activities to keep your kids busy and you sane. Day Camps:

Saddle River Valley Cultural Center (Saddle River)

School is closed but the Center is OPEN! They are offering exciting camps for children ages four through 12 years of age. On Monday, February 20, take an intergalactic journey at the Stars and Space Camp or sing and dance on stage at Broadway Kids Camp. On Tuesday, February 21, put on your paleontologist hat and dig for dinosaurs at Dinosaur Camp or Broadway Kids Camp. On Wednesday, February 22, design and build original creations at LEGGO Camp or spend some quality girl time at the Girls Club Camp. Register for one day or for all three. Each camp runs from 9am to 12pm for $45, 9am to 1pm for $55 or 9am to 3pm for $80. Visit the website to register or call at (201) 825-3366.

President’s Week Baseball Camp (Upper Saddle River)

This baseball camp runs from February 20 – 24 and will teach your child hitting, pitching, fielding, throwing and more. The camp is available for children ages six through 13 years of age. Full-day camp sessions run from 10am to 4pm and cost $399, which includes a catered lunch. Half-day camp sessions run from 10am to 1pm and cost $299. Register online or call (800) 282-4638

Abrakadoodle’s Geo Pop Art Camp (Ridgewood)

This mini-camp, offered by Ridgewood’s Parks and Recreation Department, makes math “fun as geometric shapes rule and students learn about architecture, design and color.” This camp is for kids in grades K – 3 and will be on Wednesday and Thursday, February 22 and 23 from 9am – noon at The Stable. The cost is $95, including materials. (201) 670-5560

Monroe Street Movement Space Spring Break Arts Camp (Hoboken)

This arts camp is offered for children ages four through 12 years of age. An art teacher and two dance/movement teachers will be on staff daily teaching various forms of art and combinations of creative movement, dance, yoga, etc. Activites include singing, songwriting, poems, plays and jewelry making. The camp will take play February 20 through 24 from 9am to 3pm or 9am to 5pm daily. The cost is $250/child for the half-day session and $300/child for full-day. Students must be enrolled for the full week. (201) 239-1463

My Gym President’s Day Camp (Hoboken)

Your child will enjoy games, sports, arts and crafts and more on February 20 from 2pm – 5pm. My Gym camp is for kids who are potty trained 2 ½ year olds through 10 year olds. The cost is $40/child for members and $50/child for non-members. Reserve your spot ahead of time. (201) 758-8390

Branchburg Sports Complex School’s Out Camp (Branchburg)

Bring the kids for field sports and games, laser tag and more. Camp with be held Monday Febrary 20 from 9am – 4pm and includes lunch for $65/child ($60/child for BSC members). (908) 203-1600

Mad Science Spring Kamp (Paramus)

Mad Science is offering an Explorers day camp for the week of February 20 – 24 from 9am – 3pm. Hands-on activities include lab and mixing concoctions and chemical combos. The cost is $300/child for grades K – 5. (201) 236-1400

Sports Domain Academy Camp (Montclair)

SDA is offering a President’s Week soccer camp from February 20 – 22. Peanuts Camp, for kids’ ages three to four years, teaches basic soccer techniques. The cost is $60/child and the camp runs from 9am – 10:30am. Kickers Camp, for kids’ years five to eight years, is a “fun-filled soccer experience” with activities including skill themes, world cup day, etc. The cost is $90/child and the camp runs from 9am – noon or 9am – 3pm for $120/child. Pro-Training Camp, for kids’ nine to 12 years of age, combines “fun with learning in a focused environment.” The cost is $90/child for the 9am – noon session and $120/child for the 9am – 3pm session. Activities:

Liberty Science Center (Jersey City)

Along with the usual great activities offered for kids, LSC will be holding some special events during the February school break. Engineers Day will be held on Monday, February 20 and Saturday, February 25. It is a festival-style event featuring hands-on activities led by real engineers. Beginning Tuesday, February 21 come to see The Mathemagician Art Benjamin show – tickets are free with museum admission. Plus, check out current exhibits like the Touch Tank, Animal Artifacts, We Explore (for children ages two – five) and much more! The LSC is normally closed Mondays, but will be open on Monday, February 20. Extended hours from February 18 – 24 are 9am – 6pm. Admission is $15.75 for age 13 and up and $11.50 for children age two – 12. (201) 200-1000

Jersey City Gymboree Sweetheart Party(Jersey City)

Join in the fun on Monday, February 20 at the Sweetheart Party! Mixed ages can play at 10am and 4pm. Activities include music, dancing, crafts, snacks and more. Admission is $25/child for Gymboree members and $30 for non-members. Reserve your spot in advance. (201) 918-6988

Bergen PAC Allstar Weekend – Disney’s Next Big Thing Winner (Englewood)

Allstar Weekend is the winner of Disney’s Next Big Thing contest. Come see them perform on Tuesday, February 21 at 6pm. Tickets are $49, $35 and $25.

Cutie Patootie Playspace (Englewood)

Enjoy open play hours during the February break! Hours for open play will be Monday – Thursday 10am – 6pm, Friday 10am – 2pm and Saturday 9:30am – 1:30pm. Admission is $15/child. Wednesday is “half price hump day,” so kids play for $7.50 all day! (201) 503-1300

Comic Book Creations at The Stable (Ridgewood)

Let your child learn how to create a comic book on February 20. This class is offered by Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation and will be held at The Stable. There are two sessions: Grades K – 1 from 9:15am to 10:15am and Grades 2 – 3 from 10:30am to 11:30am. The class costs $20, including materials. Register online or call  (201) 670-5560

Kidz Village (Kenilworth and Woodbridge)

This play facility is a great place to take the kids on a daytrip when school is out. There are many attractions including an indoor playground, comic book store, play supermarket, movie theatre, tool shop and more! Admission for all day play is $9.99 for kids two and up and $6.99 for walkers to under two years of age. Infants and adults are free (adults must be accompanied by a child). Memberships cost $99.99 for kids over two for three months and $179.99 for six months. They also offer a “stay-at-home moms group” which costs $5.99 for kids two and older 10am – 2pm Monday through Friday with a $30 yearly family fee. Newark Museum (Newark)

Visit the Newark Museum on Monday, February 20 from 12:30pm – 4:30pm for the President’s Day Open House event. Act as the president of the gallery and invent games and adventures! There is also a puppet show called “Guess Who Signed the Constitution” at 2pm. Also, don’t forget to check out the planetarium! Admission is a suggested donation of $10/adults and $6/children.
