Celebrate Cinco de Mayo, New Jersey-Style
Don your sombrero, dust off the marimba, and head out for some Cinco de Mayo family fun! There’s music to dance to (at a library, if you can believe it), food and drink to consume (everywhere), Monarch butterfly celebrations, parades, and a 5K to run (to negate the cheese calories). With all this going on, your kids will surely siesta well, and you can mix up that margarita you so richly deserve.
Canciones: Hispanic Music for Cinco de Mayo at the Montclair Public Library (Montclair)
Forget Marion the librarian shushing your little chicas and chicos–it’s time to sing out loud at the Montclair Public Library! Traditional Hispanic children’s music fills the 3rd floor children's department Thursday, performed on the acoustic guitar and the Cuatro (pronounced “kwä’tro”,) Puerto Rico's national instrument. Ages 3 and up. Friday, May 3 at 4pm. FREE, no registration is required. Call 973-744-0500 ext. 2236 with any questions.
Cinco De Mayo Parade and Festival at The Merchant (Jersey City)
Forget the siesta, join the fiesta! Catch the Jersey City Cinco de Mayo parade, then head inside to eat up some empanadas. Mexican cuisine not your family’s thing? No worries–you can get Italian food also. Just tell your kids they’re “nuevo noodles.” Friday, May 3, 4pm to midnight. Call The Merchant at 201-200-0202 for more information.
3rd Annual Cinco de Mayo 5K Run/Walk (Lafayette)
The average margarita contains 540 calories, and don’t even think about that big platter of nachos! Reason enough to hit the road Saturday in a 5K run/walk to benefit the Lafayette Education Advancement Foundation. Part trail, part road, this race takes your family through the beautiful Sussex County countryside. The run kicks off with a hill, though, so in this case, DO drink the water! Saturday, May 4, 8:45am. $25./participant. Registration is available online. Email LEAF5K@gmail.com for more information.
Beautiful Butterflies, Birds, and Cinco de Mayo Family Festival at the Camden Children's Garden (Camden)
Celebrate the return of Monarchs from Mexico in this butterfly and bird-filled Cinco de May party! Los niños create crafts, partake in a planting activity, and learn about butterflies inside the Butterfly House while experiencing butterflies flying, basking and nectaring in a lush tropical environment. If you’re lucky, you may even get a few to land on you! Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12, 1pm-4 pm. FREE with admission: $6./person; FREE for children two-and- younger.
