March GO List: The Best Things To Do With NJ Kids This Month
Welcome to the second installment of our new feature, a monthly GO list of the top ten activities in New Jersey in the upcoming month, so let's GO: March! We carefully investigated and curated a list of family-fun stuff that we ourselves would like to participate in (and some we already have experienced), so enjoy our Top Ten (or so) Picks for the month of March in NJ!
The Curious George and Avatar Exhibits at Liberty Science Center (Jersey City, NJ)
They were on our list last month and probably will be on it until they close in May, because they are so so fun and special. Your younger kids will love the Curious George exhibit, which presents key concepts in science, math, and engineering, and the activities which help kids to learn like George, through direct experience and problem solving. Your older kids will groove on the Avatar exhibit where they can create their own avatar, learn the Na'vi language, and virtually enter the world of Pandora. May we say "so so fun and special" again? I think we may. Our Events Editor, Sasha Muzzarelli, visited the exhibit a few days ago and has this to say: "'Let's Get Curious' is a great late winter outing for young kids that need to get some energy out. Toddlers and preschoolers can learn and explore in this hands on exhibit with building blocks, a make believe farm stand, a huge yellow slide and even mini golf!" Free with museum admission.
Spring Family Fun Days (Chester, NJ)
We do love Alstede Farms and once you throw two new baby lambs into the mix, our family fun cup runneth over. Wagon rides, Moon Bounce, play in the “Corn Kingdom”, go on an Easter Egg Hunt, and take your picture with the Easter Bunny. Squee! March 23rd through March 30, at various times. $11.95/Child $4.95/Adult. (908) 879-7189.
Scooby Doo Live! Musical Mysteries at Mayo Performing Arts Center (Morristown, NJ)
A slightly more expensive endeavor, but my kids FREAK OUT at the mere mention of Scooby Doo and this brand-new-for-2013 national tour is only playing one day in New Jersey at our beloved Mayo Performing Arts Center, so it's a must for our Top Ten list. Friday, March 29 at 1pm and 4pm. Tickets run between $29 and $59 ($59 comes with VIP package). Purchase tix here.
The Golden Dragon Acrobats present Cirque Ziva (Wayne, NJ)
Well, they are the only recognized Chinese acrobatic company touring the U.S., so we have to recommend. The Golden Dragon Acrobats bring to you a new fast-paced, technically innovative and beautifully presented show, Cirque Zíva. Friday, March 8 at 8pm. Adults/$30, Children/$25. boxoffice@wpunj.edu
Pi Day (Princeton, NJ)
This is a huge favorite amongst Jerseyites, although it probably should be called Pi Weekend, since it runs both Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10. Einstein lived in Princeton, NJ for over 20 years, so on Pi Day the heart of Princeton celebrates his birthday and all the genius residents of our famous Ivy League town with a ton of events, some of which are Pi Recitations, a Pie Eating Contest (get it? Of course you do), an Einstein Look-a-Like contest, and a Dinky Train Ride with old Albert himself. Mostly FREE (some events and activities charge a nominal fee), but space is limited, so call 609-921-6748, x102 or e-mail eve@princetonhistory.org to reserve.
VocaPeople (Morristown, NJ)
Okay, this one falls under the heading of "we haven't seen it ourselves yet, but it sounds so interesting and has so many great reviews that we're recommending it". VocaPeople is an Israeli group that performs a cappella and beat box versions of much-loved songs, including favorites from Madonna, Queen and even Mozart. No instruments, no sound effects—just eight incredible talents breathing life into your favorite music. It's being billed as "Blue Man Group meets Glee" and we're all over that. Friday, March 22 at 8pm at Mayo Performing Arts Center. Tickets range between $29 and $59. 973-539-8008.
Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer (Newark, NJ)
We're a little bummed that no live animals will be a part of this show, but still we can't resist the Dog Whisperer in person. The star of TV’s Emmy-nominated show brings his pet wisdom to this live event. Fans of the show (and all dog lovers) will be immersed in Millan’s world as the author of Cesar’s Way reveals secrets to happier, healthier relationships between humans and their canine companions. Attendees will come to understand how people play a role in their dog’s behavioral issues, and will learn how to alter this dynamic by learning how to see the world “through a dog’s eyes.” Using state-of-theart multimedia to illustrate his concepts, Milan will share amazing insights into man’s best friend. Sunday, March 10 from 7pm to 9pm at NJPAC. $39.50-49.50.
Easter Bunny Breakfast at Imagine That (Florham Park, NJ)
As far as children's museums go, we're pretty fond of Imagine That, so you add in some bagels, juice and a huge white bunny for photographs, and you've got a fun day ahead. Saturday March 9, at 10am, Sunday, March 10 at 10am and Sunday, March 31 at 10am (this one also has an egg hunt and a mini-parade). $13.99/Child $10.99/Adult. (973) 966-8000.
