Me

The most interesting and life-changing parenting book I've read.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Anna Fader - Founding Editor
I was born in Park Slope, spent my early years in the West Village and by the time I graduated high school, had lived in 4 of the 5 boroughs. Growing up in NYC in the 70s meant the streets were my playgrounds, museums and avant garde music venues were the kid-friendly activities and living downtown taught me the importance of creating community for families in NYC.

Now, raising my own two children in Lower Manhattan, I try to create the same sense of magic and community that I grew up with, despite today's more commercialized version of kid-friendly New York.

I started writing Mommy Poppins in 2007 to share my vision for a more artsy, educational, non-commercialized and community-oriented way to raise kids in New York City. Today, Mommy Poppins is relied on by over 250,000 parents each month to curate the best things to do with kids in New York City, New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut, Boston and Los Angeles and I'm happy that we are successfully helping families do more than just find a way to spend an afternoon, but sharing activities that are enriching and create amazing memories together.

Apple Picking Farms in New York and New Jersey: Where to Pick Your Own Apples near NYC

Things to do with kids: Apple Picking Farms in New York and New Jersey: Where to Pick Your Own Apples near NYC

Labor Day is behind us and we all know what that means (and it's not just that we can't wear white anymore). We have officially started apple picking season! We've rounded up some of the most fun apple farms to pick your own apples (some in NJ and some in NY) and every farm offers a unique experience whether you're looking for the hay rides, apple fests, or just a day out in the country. But get out there soon before all the apples are gone!

Week in Review: Taste of Tribeca, Family Camping, Kid-Friendly Brooklyn, Strawberry Picking and More

Things to do with kids: Week in Review: Taste of Tribeca, Family Camping, Kid-Friendly Brooklyn, Strawberry Picking and More

Photo of the week: Brendan Fraser came to the hospital to premier his new movie, Furry Vengeance with the kids at the Cornell pediatrics unit. He actually sat through the whole thing with them, which was really quite an act of charity considering how sick he must be of seeing his butt getting kicked by animals over and over...and over...again. Good man!

Here's what you might have missed on the blog this week:

What's Happening! The Week in Review

Things to do with kids: What's Happening! The Week in Review

There's so much going on we thought it might be helpful to provide a quick weekly round-up of all the things we've posted and what's hot to make it easier to follow along. If this is helpful, let us know.

This week's photo: A sign on a dirt road in Vermont that our GPS had led us down. I guess somebody was sick of lost tourists driving up to their house.

New Jersey Weekend Events for Kids July 17-19: Historic Train Rides, Ice Cream, Tall Ships, City of Water Festival and More

There is a bit of everything for everyone in New Jersey this weekend.  You can take a ferry from New Jersey to Governor’s Island for City of Water Day, sail the Hudson on a historic schooner, or ride an antique caboose train to the nostalgic sounds of old railroad tracks.  Animal lovers can attend the largest cat show in the Northeast and bird lovers can hike through Liberty State Park looking for summer shore birds.  Finally, who can resist the ice cream eating competitions and tasting events at the New Jersey State Ice Cream Festival?

50 Things to Do with Kids in New York City This Summer (mostly free)

Things to do with kids: 50 Things to Do with Kids in New York City This Summer (mostly free)

I don't know about you, but this summer we've pared back on camps and vacations in an effort not to spend money we don't have. But our loss is your gain because, instead, what we're going to be doing this summer is exploring New York City and all the fun stuff we don't always have time to do during the school year.

To get organized for a full summer of fun NYC style (and 62 scarily empty days), I planned out an activity for just about every single day in July and August, 'cause, as my son would say, "that's what me do."

The following list is not comprehensive. These are the things I'm looking forward to doing this summer. These are the coolest family events coming up this summer, plus some great places I've just been meaning to get to. And most of them are free.

The Hamptons isn't all that, hang with me right here in New York. It's gonna be a blast (and don't forget to check out our Summer Activity Guide for even more great things to do with kids in NYC this summer).  I hope to see you there.
