School’s out for summer! Now that the kids are home full-time, it can be challenging to keep them busy every day. Yes, there’s always the playground and the beach, but if you’re looking for something different this summer, you’ll find New Jersey is full of surprises. Did you know there’s a six-story tall elephant in Atlantic County? Or a mining museum in Sussex County? Here’s the scoop on eight of NJ’s most unique destinations…you’ll find plenty to occupy your crew until September!
The Jersey Shore may have a bad reality TV rap, but if you can deal with a few Snookis and Teresas, the Shore boasts some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. From a beachy national park to miles of boards to be strolled, to towering lighthouses keeping watch over the seashore – whether you’re planning a day trip or a long weekend, the possibilities are endless. Here are some highlights of NJ Shore beaches from north to south. Make your NJ kid a beach baby and head on “down the shore.”
The Meadowlands, once a punch line to many NJ jokes, is now a beautifully landscaped, wild ecosystem. This Northern New Jersey destination has enchanted many visitors as an urban oasis. The transformation of the one-time landfill is a history, environmental and health lesson all rolled into one, a perfect balance of city life and wildlife…with a few highways in between. From hiking a short trail to visiting the outlets, exploring the Meadowlands is the perfect day trip for any local family.
By now, many of you have probably organized your summer with military precision. I know I have. We have this much camp and that much vacation and this much time to annoy one another and that much time to drag ourselves around town to various sprinklers. It's all mapped out. Even still, sometimes it's nice to just get away, semi-spontaneously, for a few days of family fun without having to drive very far. New Jersey and the surrounding area offer several weekend destinations ranging from waterparks to pig farms to NJ's many beaches. Enjoy the backseat conversations and wave-jumping squeals, because my brand of nostalgia dictates that I remind you, autumn will be here before you know it. Soak up the sunshine!
I do love a good water park, but if there’s one thing I hate more than being cold, it’s being wet and cold. Which is why I was so enamored of the Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Water Park in the Poconos. A balmy and constant 84 degrees, no matter what the weather outside--now this is my kind of water park. And with the mere hour and a half drive from Northern NJ, this is the ultimate in family weekend trips. Mentally put on your swimsuit, and read on for my family’s "good times" at the Great Wolf Lodge.
