Deborah Goodman Davis, author of Speeding Down The Spiral: An Artful Adventure (A Life In Print Publishing) will be doing a reading and signing of her newly released children’s book for young readers and their parents at One River School’s upcoming open house on Sunday, March 17. Speeding Down The Spiral, which is a top-rated reader selection on Amazon.com, tells the tale of two young children who visit the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City with their father. After dad gets distracted by an e-mail, the kids have a rollicking adventure down the museum’s winding staircase as they interact with famous paintings and sculptures by the artists Bourgeois, Brancusi, Cézanne, Chagall, Giacometti, Gonzalez-Torres, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, Miró, Picasso, and Warhol. “Deborah brings some of the Guggenheim’s finest works to life, and it’s a great way to introduce kids to the fun and beauty of art museums,” says Matt Ross, founder of One River. “We’re thrilled to have her as a guest and we’re looking forward to meeting the fans of her book.” Davis is no stranger to the art world: she has worked at a number of prestigious art museums and institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Yale University Art Gallery, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and Sotheby's, London. She has also mounted international contemporary art exhibitions that have travelled to Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Germany and Israel. Along with the visit from Davis, One River’s open house will also offer a number of other activities throughout the day, including info sessions about summer camps for kids and teens, a pre-college portfolio development presentation, and a teen workshop in electronic music production. One River’s open house will take place on Sunday, March 17 from 11AM to 4PM at 49 N.Dean Street in Englewood, with Davis’ reading and signing scheduled for noon. Admission is free, but space is limited. To RSVP, call One River Gallery at (201) 266-5244.

Internationally acclaimed storyteller Len Cabral conducts the seventh annual Celebration of Storytelling, which is open to preschool age classes, as well as individual families (appropriate for ages 3 to 5). Storytelling programs are free to participants, but seating is limited and reservations are required. The Zimmerli offers two sessions: Tuesday and Thursday, March 19 and 21, from 10 to 11 am. These popular programs fill up quickly, so early registration is highly recommended by emailing education@zimmerli.rutgers.edu or calling 848.932.6766. Children who are not part of a school group must be accompanied by an adult. Len Cabral has been enchanting audiences with his storytelling performances at schools, libraries, museums, and theaters since 1976. His Cape Verdean ancestry comes alive in his exuberant retelling of African, Cape Verdean, and Caribbean folktales, as well as original stories and tales from around the world. Cabral has performed at festivals in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Holland, Ireland, and the United States, and received the National Storytelling Network Circle of Excellence Oracle Award. The author of a children's book and contributor to several folktale collections, Cabral also has released audio collections, several receiving NAPPA and Parents' Choice awards. The Celebration of Storytelling and Preschool Educators Workshop is supported by funding from The PNC Foundation as part of PNC Grow Up Great, a multi-year $350 million investment in early education.
