Now that my oldest child is ten (gasp!), I understand that annoying phrase I heard often during those difficult baby/toddler times, "The days are long, but the years are short". Thankfully, filling those short years with quality bonding time will be even easier with our Top 100 not-to-be-missed family activities right here in the Garden State. Yes, we have two fantastic large cities within driving distance, but there's tons of incredible stuff right here in Jersey to make memories that will last forever!
Goblins and ghouls and witches, oh my! From Friday, October 26, to the Big Day itself, New Jersey has an array of free events like parades, pumpkin carvings, spooky storytimes, glowing gardens, trick-or-treating (at the mall), even a reenactment of Michael Jackson's Thriller! Check out the FREE events below for a (pumpkin-)smashing good time!
Culture. We all want it — and not just in our yogurt. We live next to one of the best museum cities in the world, but our dear NJ also has much to offer in the 'get smart' department. From the wonderfully curated Newark Museum, to lovely small spaces like Monmouth Museum, there's an array of exhibits and activities for the whole family. And NJ museums don't take all day, so get cultured up until lunchtime, then go for a hike, have a picnic, or hit another gallery. You'll be more interesting by dinnertime.
Just 25 miles west of NYC, Morristown is rich in history, culture, and offers lots of fun for families. Where else can you walk alongside a seeing eye dog in training, shop at one of the best chocolate shops in the area, catch a kid friendly theater performance and visit a few places where George Washington actually DID sleep! I've had a blast exploring Morristown for over a decade with my brood and compiled my top 25 fun, and mostly FREE things to do in this great suburban town.
Star light, star bright…Mommy, I want to see the stars tonight! If you have a little Galileo on your hands, fear not. New Jersey is home to a myriad of majestic outdoor star gazing locations, as well as many public observatories and, yes, even astronomy clubs for the truly dedicated. With the proper equipment, information and planning, your family will get an up-close look at planets, star clusters and the Moon. Happy star-gazing, NJ!
