Book Review: "Following Ezra"

9/27/11 - By Dena

"FOLLOWING EZRA: What One Father Learned About Gumby, Otters, Autism And Love From His Extraordinary Son" is a true story of a young Autistic boy named Ezra, as told by his father Tom, an amazing man who refused to grieve for the child Ezra didn’t turn out to be. Whether you have a child with special needs or not, this story is truly inspiring.  It made me laugh and cry, brought back memories of the struggles my boys have faced, and gave me hope for their future.

Throughout this book, you follow Ezra through the first thirteen years of his life.  You are taken on a wonderful journey into the world of Ezra’s beautiful, complex mind.  From his ability to recall facts about animals, to his gift of being able to remember dates, you will truly be in awe over how extraordinary this young boy really is.  And if he could be any more amazing – Ezra had a sense of humor! (even if he didn’t know how funny and quirky he actually was).  His knack for being blunt to individuals about their appearance or giving them a possible timeframe of their death will make you smile ear to ear.

Equally inspiring is the journey of his father, who loved his son so much he let Ezra take the lead in his own life.  He encouraged him, supported him, and accepted him.  According to Tom, “It wasn’t about finding the right expert for my child; it was learning to be the right parent.”  I guarantee you that by the end of this book, you will realize just how important that statement is.

If you are touched by kids with special needs or just love to read inspirational and moving stories, you must read this book.  You will fall in love with Ezra and become his personal cheerleader as you follow him through every remarkable milestone!
