Things to do with kids: April Spring Festivals for NJ Kids and Families

You may still be waiting for the weather to warm up (and itching to get out of the house), but you can get the whole family into a spring state-of-mind. What’s a better excuse for a day trip than a spring festival? As usual, NJ doesn’t disappoint. Check out these great April spring festivals for NJ kids and families to enjoy, and check back in next month for May festivals! If you're still looking for spring time fun, take a look at our post on spring activities for NJ kids and families. 
 

The 36th Annual Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival, Newark
April 6 - 20, 2013, Branch Brook Park
This two week festival features the Cherry Blossom 10K Run on April 7, the Children’s One-Mile Fun Run/Walk on April 20, the Cherry Blossom Challenge Annual Bike Race on April 6, weekend trolley tours, and the Essex in Bloom Photo Workshop Series and more. The highlight is Bloomfest, which includes Japanese cultural demos, live music, children’s activities, a craft marketplace, food and more. Bloomfest will take place on April 14 from 11am - 5pm at the Cherry Blossom Visitor’s Center. Bloomfest is free, check prices for individual events. 973-268-3500

43rd Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, Tinton Falls
April 14 - 17, 2013
Celebrate spring and art in Monmouth County! Check out the work of more than 160 artists, workshops and entertainment for children, daily artist demonstrations, Chance Art Auction, food by Le Petit Cafe and much more! For the most fun with the little ones go on April 14 from noon - 8:30pm for Family Day and enjoy various children's programs for two age groups: 4 - 7 and 8 - 12 years old. 732-747-8278

Earth Day 2013, Jersey City 
Saturday, April 20, 2013, Liberty State Park 
Celebrate Earth Day and spring at Liberty State Park. The event will be held for Hurricane Sandy relief this year, after the storm caused damage in the park last October. A 5K family run and walk begins at 10am. Click here to register. The Earth Day Fair and Kid’s Kingdom run from 11am - 4pm. Maywood Springtime Family Funfest, Maywood

This old-fashioned spring festival and street fair is no small affair -- this year they expect 20,000 attendees! Features include kiddie rides, climbing wall, games, live entertainment, music, vendors, crafts, food (yummy street fair foods like sausage and peppers, pig roast pulled-pork, zeppole -- you get the idea) and much more! Cape May Spring Festival, Cape May 
April 26 - May 5, 2013
Come to the country's first seaside resort and celebrate spring. The nine-day festival includes events like Cape May's Chalfonte Hotel exhibit opening, the chocolate championship tour and tasting, ghosts of Cape May trolley tour, crafts, antique shows, lighthouse full moon climb, private home tours, wine tastings, a vintage dance weekend and much  more. 32nd Annual Shad Festival, Lambertville
April 27 and 28, 2013 from 12:30pm - 5:30pm
The Shad Festival celebrates the Shad fish and the region's arts community. Check out more than 80 artists and crafters, live music, great food (including shad chowder!) and family fun including face painting and sand art and much more.
