Weekly Wrap Up: Carousels, Egg Hunts and Nature Activities for NYC Kids

4/21/11 - By Raven Snook

Happy everything! Easter, Passover, Earth Day and spring break all coincide this week, which means a lot of fun (and food!) for families through the weekend.

Of course, spring break lasts until next Tuesday, so be sure to check out our roundup of free and inexpensive things to do.

It's not all about the holidays around here, though. We wrote about a lot of other awesome activities and services for families over the past seven days. From giant dinosaurs to a doctor who only makes house calls, here's what we covered this week on Mommy Poppins in NYC, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

New York City

We're still raving about the American Museum of Natural History's new exhibit The World's Largest Dinosaurs, which spotlights the massive sauropods.

We also enjoyed TADA! Youth Theater's latest show, the sci-fi rock musical Odd Day Rain, about technology and tweens.

In honor of Earth Day, and an initiative we support called B Kind 2 Earth Day, we rounded up ways families can commune with nature in the city all year long.

For Easter, we shared our favorite candy shops as well as creative ways to get rid of all those sweets come Monday.

Got a skateboarder in your home? Then check out these awesome (but safe!) skateparks.

If carousels are more your kid's speed, we've updated our roundup of NYC merry-go-rounds, and added details about three new ones set to open in the near future.

Parents of little Queens kids can learn all about the classes offered at the Sunnyside Arts Cooperative, which is run by a group of local moms.

We also tried out a local pediatrician who only makes house calls.

Finally, we rounded up the best things to do this weekend in the city, including egg hunts, a free outdoor screening of The Muppets Take Manhattan and the Fifth Avenue Easter Parade

New Jersey

Our bloggers across the Hudson have been very busy! First, they reviewed the new advice book Parenting Without Power Struggles.

Get ready for a supersize two-week celebration when Buttons the Hippo turns 14 at the Adventure Aquarium. Not surprisingly, it's touted as one of the best bets this weekend for families.

Thinking about taking a day trip? Consider the Campgaw Mountain Reservation.

Long Island

Our LI site highlighted unique places to throw children's birthday parties.

Best bets for the weekend include Easter egg hunts, and a really awesome petting zoo.

Connecticut

Grab a train to the country and celebrate Earth Day all over the state.

Cool Deals

Snag two tickets to see the rocking kiddie band Junior Jam and a copy of the group's award-winning CD for just $16 via Poppins Perks. Remember, every deal helps fund a project at a local public school.
