Weekend Events in NJ August 7-8: State & County Fairs, National Lighthouse Day, Honey Harvesting, Summer Socials

With three State and County Fairs throughout NJ this weekend, you can get your fill of livestock competitions, pie eating contests, demolition derbies, music, and even $10 hot air balloon rides!  Or enjoy a FREE day of honey harvesting (and tasting!) at the Howell Historical Farm.  Pirate Pete will make an appearance at the Cape May Lighthouse on Saturday where there will be a slew of pirate and shipwreck themed events in celebration of National Lighthouse Day.  Families can also get retro at Grounds for Sculpture's 50s themed Summer Social by sipping malt shakes and making crafts out of old vinyl records.  Finally, family fun day at a winery?  Yes!  With wine tasting & food for adults and tractor rides & barefoot grape stomping for the kids, everyone is happy...

New Jersey State Fair (Augusta)
The NJ State Fair and Sussex County Horse Show has enough to keep you busy all weekend with exhibits of livestock and animals, horse shows, pony rides, entertainment ranging from racing pigs to performing puppies, singing, vendors, foods, animal competitions, etc.  On Saturday there will be a wood chopping competition, monster truck rides, the Annual Judging and Crowning of the Queen of the Fair, and Monster Truck Rides.  Sunday's offerings include the Annual Chili Cookoff Contest, Lawn Mower Racing, and a Demolition Derby. Saturday & Sunday from 10am to 10pm.  Admission is $11 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12. Kids 5 & under are free.  Parking is free.

Warren County Farmers Fair & 10th Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival (Harmony Township)
What more can you ask for: a fair AND hot air balloon rides!  Enjoy daily farm events and exhibits, horse shows, pony rides, baking exhibits, 4-H events, antique cars, arts & crafts, and more.  Saturday is the ATV Mud Bog competition.  The kid's tent has crafts, a pottery zone, clowns, Wild West Entertainment, pie eating contests, and "Fear Factor Veggie Style." Best of all, you can enjoy tethered hot air balloon rides for just $10 from 4pm to 8pm or just watch the daily balloon launch at 6:30pm. Saturday, 8am to 10pm, Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids 5-12.  Free parking.

Middlesex County Fair (East Brunswick)
Saturday is Kids Day at the Fair!  Enjoy games, prizes, and a performance of the live action puppet show ImaginOcean.  That's not to mention farm animals, clogging, a horse costume class, a seeing eye dog show, magic shows, food and rides. Saturday 11am to 11pm, Sunday 11am to 7pm.  Adults $6, Kids 3-12 $1.  Parking is free.

Honey Harvest at Howell Historical Farm (Lambertville)
Beekeeper Bob will get to work this weekend removing the boxes that contain frames of honey and brush thousands of bees off the frames (while you stand at a safe distance away, of course).  After the honey is harvested, kids can help spin honey and of course have a taste! Saturday from 10am to 3pm.  FREE admission and parking. $2 materials fee for crafts.

National Lighthouse Day (Cape May)
In celebration of National Lighthouse Day, the Cape May Lighthouse is celebrating with pirate hat making, storytelling, song, food, and and an appearance by Pete the Pirate!  Saturday, 9am to 2pm.  FREE

Summer Social at Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton)
Enjoy the sculpture park 50s style... there will be a Fifties Sculpture Workshop, a Fifties Dance Workshop, and even a Crafts Workshop where you can make coasters, clocks and photo frames using reclaimed vinyl 45s and LPs.  The Gazebo will offer themed fare including malt shakes and a make-your-own-sundae bar.  Finally, there will be Fifties music from 11:30am to 3:30pm.  And then there is of course the sculpture garden!  Saturday from 11am to 4pm.  Free with admission which is $12 for adults, $8 for kids 6-17.

Family Fun Day at Four Sisters Winery at Matarazzo Farms (Belvidere)
A day at a winery CAN be fun for the kids.  Four Sisters Winery at Matarazzo Farms will have tractor-drawn hayrides, wine tasting, vineyard and wine cellar tours, barefoot grape stomping, music and food including chicken and ribs barbecue. Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5pm.  Advance tickets are $8, tickets at the gate are $10 for adults, $6 for kids 11 to 20, kids 10 and under are FREE.  Admission does not include cost of food.
