Weekend Events in NJ, April 16-17: Trout Fishing, Martial Arts & Chocolate Tea Parties

This weekend you're sure to find a kid-friendly event that will suit everyone from theater-goers to nature nuts and history buffs to girly-girls. There's a Kids Trout Fishing Derby, a Martial Arts Expo, a Revolutionary themed weekend of events in Morristown, theater performances of favorite books like the Hungry Caterpillar and the Berenstain Bears, a fair at Grounds for Sculpture, and an Easter-themed Alice in Wonderland Chocolate tea party. And don't forget the many Earth Day events!

Kids Trout Fishing Derby at Echo Lake Park (Mountainside)

Bring your own fishing pole and try your hand at catching trout! Adults need a fishing license to participate (and pay a $7 entry fee), but kids 16 and under can fish without restrictions. There will be prizes for the first trout caught, largest trout, and more.

Martial Arts Expo at the Newark Museum (Newark)

On Sunday the Newark Museum hosts family day with martial arts demonstrations from the Grandmasters. Watch them do karate, jujitsu, ninjitsu, break concrete blocks and boards with their bare hands, and enjoy tons of related hands-on activities. Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Free with admission, which is $10 per adult and $6 per child. Wear your martial arts uniform and get in for free!

Revolutionary Times at the Morris Museum (Morristown)

Morristown is celebrating Revolutionary Times all weekend long. You can see an 18th Century army encampment at Jockey Hollow, experience 18th century cooking and agricultural activities at Fosterfields farms, and on Saturday the Morris Museum offers Colonial crafts and games for kids from 11am to 4pm. Morris Museum admission is $10 for adults, $7 for kids. Fosterfields' admission is $6 for adults, $4 for kids 4-16, and $2 for kids ages 2-3.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Favorites at NJPAC
(Newark)

This performance of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud, and the Mixed-Up Chameleon is brought to life with puppetry, magical black light, and music. On Sunday you can also attend a Family Puppet making Workshop in conjunction with the show. Performances are Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $20-$22 per person. The workshop is Sunday at 12:30 and costs $6 per person.

The Berenstain Bears in Family Matters at the Theatre at RVCC
(Branchburg)

Fans of the Berenstain Bear books will enjoy seeing the Bear Family live! In this performance, there is trouble in the treehouse when Brother, Sister and Papa hide their secrets in the same cookie jar.  Saturday at 1pm and 3:30pm. You can buy tickets online.

Day at the Fair at Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton)

The sculpture garden has been transformed into a fairground this weekend. Not only with there be artsy family workshops, but also live chickens and alpacas, circus performers, jugglers, face painting, balloons, cotton candy and hot dogs, and more. Free with admission, which is $12 for adults and $8 for kids 6 to 17.

Alice in Wonderland Chocolate Tea Party
(Princeton)

This tea party is all about manners! Learn Tea Etiquette, go on an egg hunt, color Easter eggs, and make your own edible chocolate favors. Sunday from 2pm to 3:30pm. $25 per person.
