The Academy Museum invites high school and college students to the Careers in Film Summit.  

This free annual program raises awareness about the range of film-related industry job pathways for students from under-resourced communities and those interested in pursuing filmmaking as a career. 

This program is aimed at high school students, college students, and those interested in behind-the-camera and film-related industry careers. Each moderated panel includes live Q&As with Academy members and industry professionals. 

Attendees can enjoy demonstrations, workshops, complimentary professional headshots, a photo activation, and free entry to museum galleries with a Summit ticket. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available.
 
SCHEDULE 

10am: Museum Door Opens   

10:30–11:15am: Welcome Remarks and Keynote Speaker (Ted Mann Theater)
Kick off the day with welcome remarks from the Academy Museum. This is followed by a conversation with Academy Award–winner Kris Bowers (The Last Repair Shop (2023)) on his experience and how to stay inspired while navigating your career.

11am - 2pm:  Behind The Camera Drop-In Workshop (Tea Room - 5th Floor)
Go on set and behind the camera with an interactive demo and learn about some of the critical roles in the storytelling process in modern filmmaking, such as Camera Operators, Behind the Scene Shooters (still image shooters), and Storyboard Artists. Students can gain a better understanding of set positions.

11am - 4pm: Careers in Film - Button Making (Ted Mann Lobby (LL1))
Aspiring Animator? Emerging Composer? Future Film Editor? Stop by and create buttons inspired by your future profession!   

11am & Noon: Exploring Sound (Shirley Temple Education Studio)
From dialogue to sound effects, learn about the different career paths that involve sound with Supervising Sound, Dialog, and ADR Editor Bobbi Banks (The Batman (2022), Selma (2014)). She shares her personal journey, followed by a demo. This is a separately ticketed event.Space is limited. Sessions are 45-minutes.     

11:30am: Costumes and Pathways (Sidney Poitier Grand Lobby)
Costume designers are responsible for bringing our favorite characters to life! Costume Designer Isis Mussenden (The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy) discusses her journey, resources, and where to begin. Followed by a Q&A.  

1:30pm: Finding Your Calling in Casting (Sidney Poitier Grand Lobby)
From the casting process to working with directors, the work of casting directors is an important part of movie making. Learn more from Casting Director Kim Coleman (BlacKkKlansman (2018)) about the various pathways and processes to becoming a Casting Director. Gain insight and advice during the Q&A. 

2pm & 3pm:  Animating a Career (Shirley Temple Education Studio)
Interested in a career in Animation? Explore the creative paths in animation such character design and production design.  Director Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Rise of the Guardians (2012)) shares his personal journey, followed by a demo.This is a separately ticketed event. Space is limited. Sessions are 45 minutes.   

4pm: Lights, Camera, Action with Antigravity Academy (Ted Mann Theater)
There is so much that goes into making a film that we don't see on screen. Academy Award-nominated director Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Blindspotting (2018)) of Antigravity Academy, a multi-hyphenate creative home for emerging artists across mediums, explores several positions with a panel of industry professionals.  

Panelists include  

  • Larry Fong, Cinematographer (Kong: Skull Island (2017), Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)) 

  • Germaine Franco, Composer (Encanto (2021), The Mother (2023))  

  • Jason Kisvarday, Production Designer (Everything, Everywhere All at Once (2022))
