It’s official- summer kicks off this weekend! The kids are done with school, camp’s around the corner and parents need some warm-weather fun to fill the gap. Look no further.  Mommy Poppins has the recipe for a jam-packed weekend. Blast off the summer at the Meadowlands energetic New Jersey State Fair. Brighten up the weekend at Terhune Orchards’ Firefly Festival. Put on your party hats and Celebrate New Jersey’s 350th Birthday at the New Jersey State Museum and Planetarium. Chill out at the theatre with family-friendly performances of The Little Engine That Could or the Frozen Movie Sing-A-Long, where it’s okay for kids (and adults) to belt out “Let It Go.” Check out the full list of weekend activities on our Event Calendar.

New Jersey State Fair (East Rutherford, NJ)
There’s no shortage of activity at this colossal event, featuring rides, food, music, animal shows, shopping, a circus and tons of other entertainment. Opening weekend festivities include “Cousin Brucie’s Palisades Park Reunion II” with 1960s legendary performers and a vintage car show.

The Little Engine That Could (Hoboken, NJ)
Relax and enjoy some indoor fun with this humorous take on the classic story. Presented by Hoboken’s Hudson Theatre Ensemble, The Little Engine That Could features music, dance and a heartwarming tale.

Beehavin' at Liberty Science Center (Jersey City)
Check out all the buzz around this comedy about bees. The live-action show tells the story about a newly-emerged bee learning the ropes in the hive.

Saturday, June 21

Frozen- The Movie Sing-A-Long (West Windsor, NJ)
Maybe you’ve seen Frozen 100 times. Make it 101 at this unique, interactive event where noise is welcome. Audiences are encouraged to sing along to the movie’s hit soundtrack, accompanied by a costume parade, trivia contest and a gift bag of things to do during the movie. So go ahead and sing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” to your heart’s content.
Hot Rods and Food Trucks (Seaside Heights, NJ)
Love cars and food? Bring the family to the shore for this fun experience, featuring hundreds of cars, prizes, music, food and an extreme “Food Truck Showdown.”

St. Gregory the Great Carnival (Hamilton Square, NJ)
Rides for all ages, games and food are all part of this enjoyable event. Top off the evening with a fireworks spectacular.

Paddle for Pink Dragon Boat Festival (West Windsor, NJ)
Come cheer on, or take part in, dragon boat races on Mercer Lake, in support of breast cancer research. The all-day festivities also include music, a raffle drawing, a silent auction, bake sale and vendors.

Sunday

Firefly Festival (Princeton, NJ)
Did you love catching fireflies on a warm summer night as a kid? Bring the family to Terhune Orchards to celebrate these dazzling creatures. Activities include wagon rides, music, an obstacle course, bug-related crafts and firefly-hunting. Food and pony rides will also be available at this bright event.

Celebrate New Jersey’s 350 Birthday (Trenton, NJ)
Happy birthday, New Jersey. Learn about our state’s 350 year history throughout the New Jersey State Museum and Planetarium. Exhibits include New Jersey on Display: World Fairs and the Garden State and Pretty Big Things: Stories on New Jersey History. Take part in putting together a quilt pattern, and learn about the state seal.

Kelly Miller Circus at YJCC (Washington, NJ)
The circus is in town at the Bergen County YJCC. Enjoy traditional tented circus acts, including elephants, tigers, ponies and circus performers. Plus, kids will have the chance to ride animals and participate in other activities pre-show. There are two performances which each run two hours.
