Hello May! With chilly temps (hopefully!) behind us and hot weather still a ways off, now is the time to enjoy the mild weather we wait for all winter! Try a photo scavenger hunt at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, fly a kite at Terhune Orchards, check out the 6th annual Dinosaur Day at Newark Museum or take in games on horseback at Lord Sterling Stables. Spring Photo Scavenger Hunt (Morristown, NJ)
Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Frelinghuysen Arboretum for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. After taking all your pictures, head back to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Scavenger lists will change every month: May’s theme is “Big, Bigger, Biggest”; and the theme for June is “Magic in the Air”. A great way for families to explore spring at the arboretum and to get outside in the fresh air! Saturday & Sunday 9am-4pm. $10/Family. 973-326-7600

Kite Day (Princeton, NJ)
Stop by Terhune Orchards (a Mommy Poppins favorite!) this weekend for their spring festival. The farm is gearing up for its bountiful growing season and there’s a ton to do! Bring your own kite or choose a ready-made kite from the wide selection in the store and test it out in the open 10-acre pasture with all the farm animals looking on. Other springtime activities include live country music, sheep shearing, barnyard games and delicious food such as grilled asparagus, fresh salads and BBQ chicken. Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm. The Ugly Duckling (Montclair, NJ)
When Siggy, the Ugly Duckling, doesn’t fit in with the other ducks, the Barnyard Brigade steps in to teach him how to get along in the real world. With their help, Siggy takes on a variety of farm animal roles as he tries to find his place in the world. A fun and fresh retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story at the Studio Playhouse Theater that both younger tots and grade-schoolers will enjoy. Ar-B-Que Day (Short Hills, NJ)
The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is celebrating Arbor Day with their 3rd annual "Ar-B-Que" this Saturday. Free events include a scavenger hunt along the 16 acres of wooded trails, cupcake decorating, face painting and a complimentary plant for each family to take home. If you’re up for more fun, purchase tickets to see the ‘Birds of Prey’ show (including pictures with Peep the cockatoo!) or take a break for lunch with Dave’s Famous Barbeque. 11am-2pm. WBGO Kids Jazz Concert (Newark, NJ)
Discover America’s original musical art form at the WBGO Free Kid’s Jazz Concert Series. This Saturday, Pianist Michael Wolff brings blues back to jazz exploring different styles of blues including old standards, rock and roll, Be Bop and beyond. Q&A sessions with the jazz musicians, small gifts and a chance to win a door prize make for a fun family afternoon. Recommended for ages 4 & up. 12:30pm. FREE. Horseback Family Fun Day (Basking Ridge, NJ)
Giddy up! Head over to Lord Sterling Stables this Sunday for tons of equestrian family fun. Start the day by watching seasoned riders as they compete in games on horseback. Then get in on the fun with free pony rides and hay rides that even the youngest family members will enjoy. Local specialty shops will be selling everything from baked goods to pretzels to lemonade so you can refuel in between rides. 8am-4pm. FREE. 908-766-5955

6th Annual Dinosaur Day (Newark, NJ)
Got some prehistoric fans in the house? Bring the family to the annual Dinosaur Day at Newark Museum! Get up close with a roaring, breathing 15 ft. T-Rex, see live animals shows, geological demonstrations and fossil digs and rubbings. Kids will also get the chance to meet Diego, the Nick Jr. action-adventure hero. If you’ve got energy left to burn, check out the museum’s popular emPOWERED exhibit, all about the science behind renewable energy. 10am-4:30pm. Free with museum admission. 973-596-6550
