Mostly Free & Fun Things To Do With NJ Kids This Weekend May 4-5: Scavenger Hunt, Pony Rides, Dino Day & More!
Hello May! With chilly temps (hopefully!) behind us and hot weather still a ways off, now is the time to enjoy the mild weather we wait for all winter! Try a photo scavenger hunt at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, fly a kite at Terhune Orchards, check out the 6th annual Dinosaur Day at Newark Museum or take in games on horseback at Lord Sterling Stables. Read on for our top picks and remember, you can always find a listing of all NJ activities in our Event Calendar.
Spring Photo Scavenger Hunt (Morristown, NJ)
Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Frelinghuysen Arboretum for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. After taking all your pictures, head back to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Scavenger lists will change every month: May’s theme is “Big, Bigger, Biggest”; and the theme for June is “Magic in the Air”. A great way for families to explore spring at the arboretum and to get outside in the fresh air! Saturday & Sunday 9am-4pm. $10/Family. 973-326-7600
Kite Day (Princeton, NJ)
Stop by Terhune Orchards (a Mommy Poppins favorite!) this weekend for their spring festival. The farm is gearing up for its bountiful growing season and there’s a ton to do! Bring your own kite or choose a ready-made kite from the wide selection in the store and test it out in the open 10-acre pasture with all the farm animals looking on. Other springtime activities include live country music, sheep shearing, barnyard games and delicious food such as grilled asparagus, fresh salads and BBQ chicken. Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm. Free admission.
The Ugly Duckling (Montclair, NJ)
When Siggy, the Ugly Duckling, doesn’t fit in with the other ducks, the Barnyard Brigade steps in to teach him how to get along in the real world. With their help, Siggy takes on a variety of farm animal roles as he tries to find his place in the world. A fun and fresh retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story at the Studio Playhouse Theater that both younger tots and grade-schoolers will enjoy.
