Hands down, May is my family’s favorite month. Gorgeous weather and outdoor events make for perfect late-spring weekends. Got a truck lover in your life? Head to Nutley’s Big Truck Day. Princess in the house? Try the Afternoon Doll Tea at Just Bead Yourself. And for the whole gang, there's Smithville Village’s Mayfest or a Woodland Walk at the NJ Botanical Gardens. Morris County’s “Bring a Guest!” (Various locations in Morris County, NJ)
This weekend is the perfect time to check out some awesome venues in Morris County. The Morris County Tourism Bureau is hosting a ‘Buy One, Get One’ special to promote local tourism at some of their most popular sites. Have the kids get crafty at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, check out the fun ‘World of Money’ exhibit at the Morris Museum or get some fresh air while learning how a turn of the century farm operated at the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Saturday & Sunday 9am-5pm. Please check the Morris County Tourism Board’s website for a detailed schedule of venues and events. Admission is buy one, get one (prices vary depending on venue).  

Mayfest (Smithville, NJ)
The Historic Smithville Village is celebrating May in a big way with their annual ‘Mayfest’ celebration. Choose from a variety of activities to entertain your group, whether you decide to browse the many booths selling handcrafted items, ride the paddleboats or listen to live music. The carousel and train rides will be a hit with younger tots and the international food court will keep everyone well-fed. Saturday & Sunday 10am-6pm. FREE admission. 609-748-8999

Family Day: Celebrations Around the World (Princeton, NJ)
Bring the whole gang to the family-friendly Princeton University Art Museum for ‘Celebrations Around the World.’ A day of travel and adventure awaits as you explore art through the ages and from around the world. Family Day also offers hands-on activities, live performances, storytelling and a scavenger hunt. Refreshments will be served. All ages welcome. 10:30am. FREE. 609-258-3788

Big Truck Day (Nutley, NJ)
Got a little truck lover? The Township of Nutley is kicking off ‘National Public Works Week’ by inviting families to check out the high-tech equipment and vehicles used to provide service to their township. Learn all about how these vehicles work to serve the community. Then kids will be invited to climb aboard and honk the horns! 12-3pm. FREE.

Spring Bird Walk (Tenafly, NJ)
Enjoy the great outdoors before the summer heat is upon us – head to Tenafly Nature Center for a Spring Bird Walk this Saturday. Join one of the center’s Environmental Educators on a morning walk to look for warblers, raptors and other seasonal birds at TNC pond and trails.  Bring binoculars if you’ve got ‘em or just borrow a pair from the center. Make a day of it and pack a picnic lunch to scarf down after you’ve worked up an appetite hiking. Recommended for ages 7 & up. 9-11am. Free for Members, $5/Person Non-members. Pre-registration is required.

Sunday, May 19th

Afternoon Tea for My Doll & Me (Westfield, NJ)
If you’ve got a girlie girl, you can’t go wrong when you mix ‘fancy’ tea, dolls, jewelry and dresses! For a fun Sunday outing, bring your favorite doll to Just Bead Yourself in Westfield where guests will enjoy a kid-friendly high tea with iced tea, lemonade and cookies. Bead specialists will help each child create a special matching necklace for themselves and their doll. Recommended for ages 3 & up. Reservations are required. 1:30-3:30pm. $35/Child. 908-232-3411

Family Woodland Walk (Ringwood, NJ)
Venture up north to the Skylands New Jersey Botanical Gardens this weekend for some fresh air and spring exercise. Join a nature guide on an easy, family-friendly walk (younger tots in carriers and grandparents welcome too!) through the beautiful wooded trails. Depending on the weather, your group might meander along the Garden's charming woodland and meadow paths, with steppingstone bridges to navigate. More ambitious groups may make the easy trip to the top of Mount Defiance for a splendid view across the Ramapo Mountains while exploring some of the geology, plants and animals that call the Botanical Garden home. 1pm. FREE.
