Here’s to hoping that old saying “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” still holds true! But before you start daydreaming of blooming flowers and milder temps, why not embrace the last of winter fun that Jersey has to offer? It’s almost time to bid maple sugaring season goodbye so get your fill of the sweet stuff with the Maple Sugar Memories program at the Watershed Reserve or bring the whole family by Great Swamp for their awesome end-of-season Maple Sugar Festival. You can also celebrate Dr. Seuss and his beloved and zany books at Morris Museum’s Dr. Seuss Family Festival or take in an enchanting performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Science & Art of the Brain (Newark, NJ)
Newark Museum continues its Science & Art series with some engaging exhibits all about the human brain. Check out The Brain; Two Ways to discover how artists can trick your brain into seeing something that isn’t there and Fool Me Once, all about how our minds take shortcuts. You’ll pick up lots of tips along the way as you use brain knowledge to develop healthier habits!

Winter Weekend Photo Scavenger Hunt (Morristown, NJ)
The Frelinghuysen Arboretum wants to get families outside and moving, even in cold temps! Grab a camera (or your phone) and stop by their Haggerty Education Center for a scavenger hunt list, then romp around the arboretum grounds as you check things off your list – prizes for all!

Saturday, March 1st

Dr. Seuss Family Festival (Morris, NJ)
Head to Morris Museum this Saturday and celebrate the birthday of everyone’s favorite childrens author – Dr. Seuss. Kids will keep busy as they make a Fox in the Socks puppet, build stacking turtles and design a Thing 1 or Thing 2 book mark. Stick around afterwards for a special reading of The Cat in the Hat.

Maple Sugar Memories (Pennington, NJ)
Bring your family to the Watershed Reserve to enjoy the maple syrup made on site this March. After a short walk to visit the tapped trees and the ‘evaporation station,’ take the yummy maple syrup taste test challenge and warm yourself by the cozy fire. And of course, dress for wintry weather!

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Morristown, NJ)
There’s nothing like live theater, especially when done by Disney! Experience the romance and enchantment of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. The classic musical love story is filled with lavish sets, costumes and dazzling song and dance numbers.

Maple Sugar Festival (Chatham, NJ)
The peak of the sugaring season is celebrated with the annual Maple Sugar Festival at Great Swamp. Watch sap evaporate into syrup, experience making maple cream first hand and taste the final product. Kids can enjoy a variety of crafts, games and the best part of all – maple snow cones!

Mammoth Follies (Newark, NJ)
When was the last time you saw a dinosaur sing and dance? Take a prehistoric journey in this musical, performed by a cast of giant dinosaur puppets! Mammoth Follies is a larger-than-life musical review that explores the wonders of evolution, complete with original songs and zany humor.

Art for Families (Princeton, NJ)
Drop by the Princeton University Art Museum on Saturdays for some hands on family-friendly art. This weekend’s theme is Master “Pieces!” Children will pick up visual clues and search the museum for original works of art before creating their own masterpiece to take home.

Sunday, March 2nd

Read Across America Day (Madison, NJ)
Bring your grade-schoolers to the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts this Sunday to celebrate Read Across America. Kids can bring their own favorite book to read to the group and then enjoy story time by one of the museum’s educators
