12/31/13 - By Sasha Muzzarelli

Welcome to 2014! With the dizzying rush of the holidays just behind us, it’s time to relax and maybe even spend some quality time with the family without a jam-packed schedule. You’ll find some great educational outings for older kiddos like the emPOWERED: Generators exhibit at Newark Museum or the next Super Science Saturday at Morris Museum. Younger tots will love exploring and climbing at Liberty Science Center’s Bob the Builder – Project: Build It! If you’re looking to do something all together, check out the Welcome Winter Walk at Mountain Lakes Preserve or get goofy with a Grease Sing-A-Long at the Mayo Performing Arts Center! And remember, you can find a full list of weekend activities in our Event Calendar.

All Weekend

Bob the Builder – Project: Build It! (Jersey City, NJ)
If you’ve got younger tots that love to climb and explore and you still haven’t checked out this awesome temporary exhibit at Liberty Science Center, this is a great weekend to do it! The holiday crowds will be gone and you can let your little construction worker play all day. They’ll climb on large construction machines, assemble a garage to keep them in, plant flowers in Wendy’s garden, use wrenches to fix a sink, operate kid-safe workshop machinery, and even run a “water pump.”

emPOWERED: Generators (Newark, NJ)
Head to Newark Museum for a neat energy exhibit that both kids and grownups will enjoy. Investigate different kinds of generators and learn about how electricity is produced at interactive stations.  And while you’re there, don’t forget to visit their other current exhibits like Brain Games and Dynamic Earth.

Saturday, January 4th

Super Science Saturdays (Morristown, NJ)
Now that Christmas break is over and the kids are (hopefully) back in the school mindset, why not take the whole family to the latest Super Science Saturday at Morris Museum? This weekend’s theme is ‘Pennies’ and children will be invited to participate in a hands-on workshop about chemical reactions and cleaning coins as they conduct their very own experiments.

Welcome Winter Walk (Princeton, NJ)
Bundle up and join Education Director Jeff Hoagland on a morning walk at the Mountain Lakes Preserve in Princeton to explore the wonders of the natural world in winter. Discover the unique survival strategies of local plants and animals from milkweed to meadow vole and red oak to robin. Learn where animals store food and how they survive the season’s relentless chill. And enjoy the fun of their special ‘Hibernation Game’ to close out the morning!

Season’s Greetings (Fort Lee, NJ)
The interpretive staff at the beautiful Fort Lee Historic Park will present a special winter living history program this Saturday afternoon. Visitors may stop by the officers’ hut during this time for musketry demonstrations, music, homemade apple sauce, hot cider and other treats to celebrate the brisk winter months.

Sunday, January 5th

Harp Ensemble Concert (Madison, NJ)
The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts always has an interesting and artistic event going on and this weekend is no exception. Join musician Odarka Stockert as she gathers several of her fellow harpists, known as Harpantics, in one unbelievable afternoon of music. Be swept away with the beauty of the ensemble’s sound.

Sing-A-Long Grease (Morristown, NJ)
Grease is the word and the audience gets to sing all of them! Slick back your hair and put on your poodle skirts and leather jackets as the audience at the Mayo Performing Arts Center gets to join in on the fun and sing along to all of the songs of the classic movie Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Every performance starts with a Sing-a-long host who warms up the audience and trains them how to “hand-jive!”

And don't forget: We have additional activity listings in our Event Calendar. And if you are heading into NYC for the weekend make sure you visit the New York City Mommy Poppins events calendar to get the latest on all the fun to be had NYC-style.
