Happy New Year, Jersey! The holidays are officially behind us and the month of January is a great time to get back to normal routines and enjoy some down time as a family after all of December’s craziness. If you’re craving some fresh air, bundle up and check out flora and fauna at Mountain Lakes Preserve with a Welcome Winter Walk, discover Winter Waterfowl along Liberty State Park’s beautiful boardwalk or let the kids roam the wintry trails at Tenafly Nature Center during a Seasonal Scavenger Hunt. If the thought of the outdoors has you shivering, we’ve got you covered – let the kids get crafty at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts Family Fun Day or take in an energetic performance of Wild Kratts Live at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Saturday, January 10th

Welcome Winter Walk (Princeton, NJ)
Join Mountain Lakes Preserve Education Director Jeff Hoagland on a morning walk in Princeton to explore the wonders of the natural world in winter. Discover the unique survival strategies of local plants and animals from milkweed to meadow vole and red oak to robin. And dress the kiddos warmly for their fun and educational ‘hibernation game!’

Winter Waterfowl Walk (Jersey City, NJ)
And if you’re in the Hudson County area and want a little fresh air, check out the numerous species of waterfowl that migrate to the scenic Liberty State Park. Stroll along the boardwalk with a guide and see which birds have arrived for winter – those views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island won’t be too shabby either!

Family Fun Day (Madison, NJ)
Warm up with an educational outing to the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts this Saturday. The staff will lead kids in a monthly themed craft activity that will keep their hands and heads busy.

Seasonal Scavenger Hunt (Tenafly, NJ)
Bundle up! Families will receive a set of clues to help solve nature riddles along the Tenafly Nature Center trails. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the wintry paths to complete the hunt – prizes for all who complete the challenge!

Sunday, January 11th

Wild Kratts Live (Morristown, NJ)
It's “To the Creature Rescue!" as the Kratt Brothers activate their Creature Power Suits in this energetic show at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Through hilarious pratfalls and amazing animal facts, the Wild Kratts rescue a helpless animal friend and return her to the wild.

Rainbow Fish – The Musical (Tenafly, NJ)
ArtsPower Professional Children’s Theater presents a delightful musical based on the popular book by Marcus Pfister about friendship and sharing. Rainbow Fish loves being the most beautiful creature in the ocean and refuses to give away any of his shiny silver scales to admirers in the neighborhood. One day a wise old Octopus shows him a great new way to have real friends and be happy.

Save the Eagles Day (Paramus, NJ)
Meet the three resident eagles at Bergen County Zoo and learn all about them with interesting facts and pictures. Children can also create crafts in the Education Center.
