Family-Friendly Billiards in New Jersey

9/6/13 - By Rachel Sokol

Confession: I grew up with a pool table in my basement. Totally awesome, I admit! But here’s confession Numero Dos: I never learned how to play pool. My sister and I would roll the balls around and watch the adults in our family play, but we never learned the ropes ourselves. However, it was pretty obvious the excitement of a pool table and all its colorful balls brought people together—and isn’t that most important? Below is a list of seven family-friendly billiards venues in New Jersey. Bring your kids in for some fun—and if they’re really good, can they teach me how to properly shoot pool? It’s never too late, right?

Sandcastle Billiards, Edison
This place is for a real pool enthusiast. It’s got table after table and really defines family-friendly. With a Day Pass, adults and children can spend up to 7 hours playing pool for just $10.00 from 11am to 6pm. There’s also ping pong tables and a main room with PlayStation 3…a must-have with many kids today, trust me! 732-632-9277

Clifton Billiards Espresso Bar and & Grill, Clifton
This venue really does have something for everyone. Adults—there’s a café with cappuccinos and other soul-warming beverages. (Yes, yes, and a regular bar as well!) For both kids and adults there’s pool, of course, ping pong, darts, foozball, and you can even rent out the back room for parties. 973-928-6622

Q Ball, Vineland
A clean, friendly hotspot for locals, children are OK to bring to this pool hall, but it’s encouraged to have them accompanied by an adult. 856-691-8789

Breaker Billiards, Clifton
Also located in Clifton is Breaker Billairds, a bar with (many!) pool tables and an arcade that allows children under 12 at no charge. If you can ignore the rather suggestive sign outside the establishment (!), it's actually quite family-friendly inside. 973-773-0933

Crown Billiards, Pompton Lakes
A very cool family-friendly pool hall, Crown offers professional pool lessons (Hmmm, should I sign up?) The venue has 8 private bar sized pool tables and a regulation Ping Pong room that can be reserved exclusively for any age group—a professional pool player can even entertain the crowd with tricks. Awesome. 973-513-9266

Castle Billiards, East Rutherford
Located in East Rutherford, Castle is kid-friendly, but tends to prefer children under 12 come during the week as opposed to weekends for some fun. Venue has a large menu of food, various drinks, and a variety of fun food tables, plus music and juke box.

Elite Billiards, Edison and Milltown
A fun, cozy environment that’s family friendly and offers both pool and ping-pong. It’s BYOB but they do have foods and non-alcoholic drinks available (for the kids, obviously). Edison 732-248-7887. Milltown 732-846-7665.
