Education Centers and Activities for Homeschoolers in New Jersey

8/19/13 - By Tracy

When my family first heard I planned on homeschooling my two children they were baffled; why would I want to take on such a task, when I could “get rid” of them for six hours a day. Luckily my “crazy plan” isn't sounding too crazy, as more and more parents are ditching the school system and teaching their kids at home. New Jersey is an amazing state to homeschool in – no regulations, dozens of homeschool co-ops and groups and plenty to do. During the hours of 9-3 September through June my kids participate in nature studies, sports classes, and learning opportunities designed for homeschoolers that are either free, or extremely affordable. It's been such an amazing journey for us, and I'm excited to share some of my favorite homeschoolin' haunts.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

This year my daughter's participating in homeschool gymnastics at Central Jersey Dance and Gymnastics; the class will meet bi-weekly and will cost me $20 for both kids..which is (math genius I am) $40 per month. Completely affordable, and completely perfect for someone with commitment issues and two children under 6. Whether you're in North Jersey or South Jersey, have a child who's into baseball or fencing, there are opportunities to set up a class in the middle of the afternoon for us schoolin' at home folk. Remember that the bulk of their business happens after school hours, so most establishments are eager to work with you to set something up in the middle of the day.

Nature centers are our favorite places to be. I've contacted places like Foster Fields, Tenafly Nature Center, Flatbrook Nature Center, and Trailside Nature center about setting up classes for little ones during the day. They normally cost 5-10 dollars per kid, and can be tailored to fit any topic you may be studying, whether it's bugs or the solar system. This September Foster Fields is doing a program about canning, and pickling veggies at 1pm. What a fun opportunity to tour the farm, learn about life “back in the olden times” and try our hand at some homesteading.

Learning “centers” are another great resource; Kaleidoscope Learning Center in Blairstown is one of my favorite spots, because it offers a color array of programs. Whether you have a Maker Faire enthusiast, a budding Lego engineer, an in the works chef or a craft extraordinaire they have something for everyone. Wesley Learning center is another favorite, and there are many more I need to check out as my kids grow.

If you aren't too keen on going at it “alone,” my last bit of wisdom comes in the form of homeschool co-ops. Some are drop-off (but require parent participation) and others are completely parent run, and each person donates their time, and passion to teach children art, history, music and the likes. These are excellent opportunities for kids and parents to make friends, attend field trips, and have a blast. New Jersey Homeschool Hangout is a Meetup group that offers classes and field trips and anyone can join, although there is a yearly fee to be a member. There's also Green Valley homeschool co-op, which is members only.

Whether you're considering homeschooling, or are a seasoned at home learner you'll soon find that each day presents new opportunities for learning and adventure. I'm two years in now, and I wouldn't change it for the world.
