With three year old twin boys, our criteria for summer outings have strict criteria: Family friendly amusement park? Caters to children 12 and under? Water rides? Lunch under $20? Friendly Staff? We opened up our NJ day trips guide and sorted through our options. With five checks off our list, we strapped the boys into their car seats and headed towards the Delaware Water Gap to the magical-sounding Land of Make Believe.
Seasickness runs in my family, but thankfully that little gift has passed me up. I love being out on the water (more than I like being in the water), so I love a good boat ride. So when the Classic Harbor Line came to my very own home town of Hoboken, I jumped at the chance to take a short cruise down the river and around the tip of Manhattan. Summer is not over yet! I don't care how many Back-to-School ads you spot (and how many times your kids groan), there are still a few weeks left of summer fun. Here's a list of family-friendly (and cool!) activities for the whole family during the 'dog days' of August in our very warm state of New Jersey. Enjoy the last few weeks of your lazy, hazy. crazy days of summer.
When I'm shlepping myself and two kids to NYC, I gird my loins for a hot descent into the PATH, a motion-sickness-inducing ride on the bus or mind-numbing traffic in the tunnel. But recently I met a friend to take the NY Waterway ferry to mid-town Manhattan and the experience was as different as, well... the difference between a nauseating bus ride and a lovely, fresh-air boat journey. Read on for the wonders of NY Waterway and their Summer Special for travel out of Port Imperial in Weehawken.
We'd been walking for almost an hour in the heat of the summer... my flip flops flapping against a barely-there trail, the trees providing a wee bit of comfort from the blazing sun, and my Dad telling me to hurry up! It's just over there! What we saw just took my breath away: a perfectly rounded, perfectly navy blue lake completely undisturbed. A mecca in the middle of the forest... my very own secret swimming hole!
During the dog days of summer, instead of trekking to the beach, or slipping into a pool, trek to one of New Jerseys swimming holes. Some will be filled with nature-loving folk and others will be yours alone to relish... a personal oasis in the middle of the forest. I've swam alone, and with the company of my young children (under 5 at the time) and it's been an adventure, and learning experience rolled into one. We've caught tadpoles and fish in our bare hands, seen hawks swoop down into rivers, seen bears and made memories. Below you'll find some of the most kid-friendly swimming holes in New Jersey.
